Deptt. of Zoology
The University of Jodhpur was founded in the year 1962. A year later the Postgraduate Department of Zoology came into existence. This department is over a half century old. The department is full of events, achievements and growth in terms of student intake, teaching faculty, research projects, publications and grants. The teachers, students and supporting staffs over the years have brought this department to its present status with vision and wisdom which need some mention.
The department is fortunate in having Prof. Vishwanath, FNA as its founder Head in 1963. A distinguished Zoologist, Prof.Vishwanath relinquished in 1965 handing over to world renowned Zoologist and Entomologist, Prof. M.L. Roonwal, FNA, who headed the department till 1967 before taking over as Vice Chancellor of this University. Prof. Satyender Khera, a well-knownn ematologist took over as Head in 1967 for a short period. In the same year, Prof. S.D. Mishra, an entomologist of repute took over from Prof. Kehra. Prof. Mishra rendered his services to this department as Head for about 15 years. It is during Prof. Mishra’s tenure that this department made steady progress with regard to new disciplines and frontiers of Zoology. Subjects like Environmental Biology, Fish biology and Limnology and Parasitology were established while Entomology and Cell Biology were strengthened. A concept of experimental field research was materialized and laboratory researches on erisilk and carp culture were launched. This was the period when the department laid down the foundation of fish culture, ethology and primatology.Subsequent heads were Prof. K. N. Katiyar, Prof. V.S. Durve, Prof. B. G. Kapoor, Prof. S. Johnson, Prof. S.C. Bhargava, Dr H S Nama, Dr M. L. Gupta, Prof. S.M. Mohnot, Prof. A. K. Purohit, Prof. G. R. Jakher, Prof. R. K. Gupta, Prof S. P. Singh and Prof. D. Mohan.
The faculty member is privileged to have earned the Indira Priyadarshani Vrikshamitra National Award and the National Environment Award. Our department made 30 films on different aspects of Zoology, Wildlife, Environment, etc. either independently or in collaboration with agencies like BBC, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), Australian TV, German Television, New Zealand TV, World Television, Times Television, Doordarshan, Wild Things, Hollywood and many others.The Department is lucky to have one Alexander von Humboldt Fellow, two DAAD Fellows, an EC Fellow and INSA Royal Society London Fellow. One of our colleagues was elected Fellow of National Academy of Sciences (FNASc).
Hundreds of research scholars and faculty members received Ph.D. and D.Sc. on different disciplines of Zoology. Many research papers have been published in journals of repute by the faculty members in addition to several monographs and books. The department successfully carried out various research projects funded by the UGC, CSIR, DST, DBT, ICAR, DOE, etc. This department is a premier institution in the country on animal ecology and eco physiology, behaviour, physiology, ecotoxicology, taxonomy, entomology, fisheries & limnology, environmental biology, wildlife conservation and parasitology. We have had FNA from amongst our faculty members. Likewise, some of our faculty members had the privilege to serve as President of the Zoology and Entomology Section of the Indian Science Congress in different years. Prof. M L Roonwal served as Director of the Zoological Survey of India. Prof M L Roonwal, Prof. K N Katiyar, Prof G R Jakher and Dr Vimlesh Choudhary were elevated as Vice – Chancellors of different universities.
